Session Title - Rethinking Remote Sensing Data: From Specialized Formats to a Multidimensional Mindset

Overview: Earth observation data is often taught and analyzed through sensor-specific workflows: hyperspectral analysis, SAR processing, time-series analysis, climate data cubes, and increasingly, AI-derived embeddings. While these data types appear fundamentally different, they share a common underlying structure: multidimensional arrays organized across space and one or more measurement dimensions.

This workshop introduces a multidimensional mindset for exploring Earth observation data. Rather than focusing on individual sensor types or file formats, participants will learn how reframing these datasets as multidimensional data structures enables more flexible analysis, reduces dependence on specialized tools, and supports cross-domain innovation. Through conceptual examples and applied demonstrations using ArcGIS raster capabilities, the session will show how common processing and analysis operations can be applied consistently across diverse data types.

Attendees will leave with a practical mental model for approaching new and unfamiliar datasets, empowering them to explore, analyze, and derive insight from Earth observation data even when a predefined workflow does not exist.
