Presentation Skills Workshop

Director of Caltech Theater | Story Coach at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
Great research deserves a great presentation.
Event Description: This interactive workshop is designed to help students, researchers, and young professionals communicate their scientific and technical work with greater clarity, confidence, and impact. Led by Brian Brophy, Director of Caltech Theater and Story Coach at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the workshop combines practical presentation techniques with insights from scientific communication, storytelling, and professional performance. Participants will explore how to:
- Structure a clear and compelling scientific presentation
- Explain complex ideas to different audiences
- Engage the audience through effective delivery and storytelling
- Design slides that strengthen rather than distract from the message
- Build confidence and presence when speaking on stage
- Apply these skills to conference talks, thesis defenses, technical meetings, and professional presentations
Brian has served as a Story Coach for major JPL missions including NISAR, VERITAS, and Trident, helping scientists and engineers communicate complex missions effectively. He is also a Fulbright Scholar and a 25-year veteran actor in film, television, and theater, with appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Shawshank Redemption, and Cradle Will Rock. Most recently, he delivered the Plenary Talk at IEEE MAPCON 2025 and conducted presentation workshops with IEEE communities in India and Sri Lanka.

Event Description: The Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) competition at IGARSS 2026 invites graduate students to present their research in a clear, concise, and engaging way in just three minutes.
Participants are required to submit a 3-minute video presentation as part of the application process.

Event Description: This session is dedicated to helping Young Professionals better understand how to actively engage within IEEE and GRSS and grow from membership to leadership roles. Through discussions and experience sharing from active volunteers and leaders, participants will learn about opportunities within the Society, including volunteering, technical committees, conference organization, and leadership pathways.
The session aims to encourage greater participation in the GRSS community while supporting professional and personal growth.

How to Publish Your Research: Editor Face-to-Face
Event Description: Co-organized by IEEE GRSS Young Professionals and GRSS Publications, this interactive session will bring students and early-career researchers face-to-face with experienced journal editors.
The editors will provide practical guidance on structuring a high-quality research paper, selecting an appropriate journal, preparing a successful submission, navigating the peer-review process, responding effectively to reviewers, and avoiding common mistakes that may lead to delays or rejection.
The session will also offer insights into editorial decision-making, publication ethics, research integrity, and strategies for improving the clarity, quality, visibility, and impact of scientific manuscripts. A dedicated question-and-answer discussion will give participants the opportunity to raise publication-related questions and communicate directly with the editors.
